U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Texas recently seized more than $1.2 million worth of cocaine in two separate encounters at the border.

CBP officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge cargo facility on May 10 encountered a Honda sedan seeking entry from Reynosa, Mexico, and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection with nonintrusive equipments and a canine team.

Scans showed anomalies within the vehicle, and the canine team alerted to the possible presence of narcotics. A physical search revealed 25 packages of alleged cocaine concealed within the vehicle. The packages weighed a total of 57.32 pounds.

On May 12, CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge encountered a Chrysler sedan seeking entry from Reynosa, Mexico, and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection using nonintrusive equipment and a canine team. The scan revealed anomalies within the vehicle, and the canine team alerted to the possible presence of narcotics.

A physical search revealed 14 packages of alleged cocaine hidden within the vehicle. The packages weighed a total of 35.93 pounds.

“Our CBP officers continue to display their expertise in the use of our tools and technology to keep harmful narcotics from entering our country,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.

In total, the cocaine seized across both incidents was valued at an estimated $1,245,100.
Georgia Driver Clocked At 172 MPH: 'That's Not A Typo' [Photo not cleared for use]

A driver in the metro Atlanta area was recently clocked traveling at an eye-watering 172 mph, authorities said.

"172 MPH. That's not a typo," the Douglas County Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook alongside an image of the law enforcement radar that recorded the motorist's speed.

"At that speed, a driver covers the length of a football field in well under a second — and has almost no chance of reacting to anything ahead of them," the sheriff's office warned.

"Memorial Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and we want every one of you back home safe," the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office warned motorists to slow down, buckle up, and drive sober or hand over the keys.

US Woman Allegedly Caught Transporting Guns, Ammo To Mexico [Photo not cleared for use]

A U.S. woman driving to Mexico was arrested earlier this month after multiple firearms and ammunition were seized from her vehicle at the border, authorities said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said officers conducted outbound inspections at California's Calexico West Port of Entry on May 9 encountered a 2014 Honda Accord driven by a 35-year-old U.S. citizen and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection using a nonintrusive system and canine team.

The scan and a CBP canine alerted officers to an "anomaly" in the vehicle's rear bumper. Officers conducted a physical inspection and discovered 18 packages concealed within the rear bumper and six drum magazines in the rear driver-side door.

Inside the packages, officers found six handguns, 12 magazines and 1,895 rounds of ammunition.

“Thanks to their vigilance and dedication, our officers discovered and seized multiple handguns, magazines and ammunition concealed for illegal transport into Mexico before they could reach criminal organizations,” said Calexico Port Director Roque Caza. “Their commitment to border security is vital in disrupting the unlawful flow of weapons and protecting communities on both sides of the border.”

CBP seized the firearms, magazines and ammunition. The driver was arrested and faces federal prosecution.

Suspected Car Thief Jumps Into Georgia Lake After High-Speed Chase, Crash [Photo not cleared for use]

A suspected car thief jumped into a Georgia lake in an effort to evade arrest after allegedly leading authorities on a high speed chase that ended in a crash.

The Lavonia Police Department said officers assisted the Georgia State Patrol in a pursuit of a white 2017 Subaru Outback reported stolen out of Hart County. The pursuit began near state Highway 17 and Pleasant Hill Road, with speeds exceeding 100 mph as the vehicle traveled on Gerrard Road at Highway 328/Gumlog Road.

While driving along the bridge curve over Lake Hartwell, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail. The driver then fled on foot and leapt into Lake Hartwell.

After establishing a perimeter, Lavonia Police officers and Hart County Sheriff's Office deputies used a civilian vessel to apprehend the suspect from the lake.

According to the sheriff's office, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Shawn Mays, has so far been charged with felony theft by taking and felony entering auto. Additional traffic-related charges are expected to be filed by the Georgia State Patrol.

Climber Pinned By Falling Boulder Rescued From Mt. Hood [Photo not cleared for use]

A climber in Oregon was rescued over the weekend after being pinned beneath a fallen boulder, officials said.

The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded at around 10:15 a.m. Saturday to a 911 call reporting that a climber was pinned beneath a large boulder that fell on him during his descent on Mt. Hood, east of Silcox Hut.

The sheriff's office quickly coordinated a search and rescue operation with partner agencies including multiple fire departments, Mt. Hood Ski Patrol, and emergency medical responders. The climber was "conscious, breathing, and able to talk," while rescuers worked to reach his location, the sheriff's office said.

Clackamas Fire District responded with a heavy rescue team, which hiked to the climber's location with specialized equipment to lift the boulder.

A LifeFlight helicopter transported a trauma team to a landing site near Silcox Hut, but was "recalled shortly before landing," the sheriff's office said.

The climber was finally extricated from the boulder at around 12:45 p.m. and transported via toboggan down the mountain to an awaiting LifeFlight helicopter. He was then transported to a local hospital.

"Based on initial assessments by firefighters and the flight imagery from an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) module today, the Torrey Pines on Santa Rosa Island still exist and remain largely intact. The fire front came from south to north, and appears to have lost energy after burning through the non-native grasses downslope of the trees. By the time it reached the ridge along Upper Torrey Pines Road it transitioned into a backing fire with lower intensity and moved downhill towards the ocean. This type of fire tends to consume the understory vegetation and leaves the canopy largely intact. It appears that some small pockets of the Torrey Pines did burn with higher intensity within the larger stand. These pockets that sustained more damage were likely burned in short, uphill runs by the fire. This is typically caused by material like logs rolling down hill and carrying flame down, where it then burns up the slope with more vigor."

City Hall Staff Save Injured Red-Tail Hawk Nestlings After 63-Foot Fall In California [Photo not cleared for use]

A pair of red-tailed hawk nestlings are recovering after falling more than 63 feet from their nest outside City Hall in Santa Clarita, Calif., officials said.

The City of Santa Clarita Government on Wednesday shared photos and video of the nestlings discovered in the City Hall parking lot last week, and said they are now recovering thanks to the "quick actions" of city staff who found them and the "compassionate care" of Ojai Raptor Center.

The baby hawks fell 63.5 feet from their nest outside City Hall, landing on the black asphalt of the parking lot. When staff discovered the nestlings, they immediately contacted Ojai Raptor Center, who agreed to take in the injured birds.

A city staff member transported the birds to the rehabilitation center, "helping give the young birds a fighting chance to heal and one day return to the wild," officials said.

The baby hawks are receiving veterinary care and will remain in the hospital until their injuries heal. Once they are medically cleared, the young hawks will be transferred to larger outdoor enclosures where they can "strengthen their wings and practice essential flying and hunting skills" before potentially being retuned to the wild.

Police Save Puppy From Sweltering Car In Florida Parking Lot [Photo not cleared for use]

A Florida woman is facing animal cruelty charges after a pair of police officers rescued her dog form a hot car outside a shopping center.

Lady Lake Police officers Jeffrey Burns and Michael Tisdell responded to the 5 Below shopping center parking lot on U.S. highway 27/441 in the Town of Lady Lake at around 2:25 p.m. on May 16 after a 911 caller reported seeing a dog inside a hot car with the windows only cracked open.

Outside temperatures exceeded 92 degrees when officers found the black puppy "panting heavily and showing signs of distress," town officials wrote alongside body-worn camera video on Facebook. The car was parked in direct sunlight, and was not running.

"The puppy’s tongue was extended, and she was crying and scratching at the windows in an attempt to escape," town officials said. Police believe the dog was trapped inside the hot car for "at least 40 minutes."

Burns and Tisdell unlocked the vehicle and immediately gave the dog water, and moved her to another air-conditioned vehicle. After drinking a whole bottle of water and relaxing in a cooler car, she "appeared to recover."

When police contacted the owner, identified as 26-year-old Yeneese Morejon, she allegedly told officers she was only inside “like 30 seconds” and that the store “line was long.”

Morejon was arrested and booked into the Lake County Jail on a charge of animal cruelty.

“Our officers acted quickly and compassionately to save this puppy from a potentially deadly situation,” said Lade Lake Police Chief Steve Hunt. “We are grateful for the vigilance of the citizen who called 911 and for the care shown by the officers who responded. Leaving an animal inside a vehicle in Florida heat, even for a short time, can quickly become fatal.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Texas seized more than $14 million worth f methamphetamine hidden in a shipment of lettuce over the weekend.

CBP officers at the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility on May 16 encountered a tractor-trailer hauling a shipment of lettuce from Reynosa, Mexico, and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection with non-intrusive scanning equipment.

The scan revealed "anomalies" within the trailer, and a physical inspection uncovered 307 packages of alleged methamphetamine. The packages weighed a total of 1,645 pounds, for an estimated value of $14.7 million.

“This massive load of hard narcotics will not make it to American streets, thanks to our CBP officers’ commitment to border security,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “Through the effective utilization of nonintrusive inspection technology and officer experience, as this seizure illustrates, our frontline CBP officers are protecting the homeland from the scourge of highly addictive narcotics, to include methamphetamine.”

CBP seized the narcotics and the vehicle, and Homeland Security Investigations special agents launched a criminal investigation.

Man Accused Of Misusing 911 To Report Zombies, Ghosts, UFO At His Home [Photo not cleared for use]

A West Virginia man is facing charges for allegedly misusing 911 to report a UFO, ghosts and zombies at his home, authorities said.

The Randolph County Sheriff's Office said that on May 17, deputies responded to a residence on Chick Drive in the Kerens area of Randolph County regarding "repeated" 911 calls from Clinton Wayne Nelan.

According to the sheriff's office, Nelan called 911 for a variety of complaints including "zombies, ghosts, and a UFO at his residence." Nelan allegedly made "several false claims" to the deputies, including that he was being "harassed by numerous individuals" and that he was a police officer from Louisiana.

According to investigators, Nelan "knowingly misused" the 911 system. He was arrested and booked into the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on charges of misuse of a local emergency telephone system and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Missouri Man Allegedly Dumped Woman's Body In Trash Bin In Creek [Photo not cleared for use]

A Missouri man has been charged with abandonment of a corpse after a human body was found stuffed inside a trash bin in a creek, authorities said.

The Boone County Sheriff's Office said that at around 1:40 p.m. on May 17, a 911 caller reported finding an unusual container in Perche Creek near the Missouri River. The caller said the container had been suspiciously altered and smelled of decomposition.

Deputies responded and discovered the body of a deceased woman inside the altered City of Columbia trash bin. The remains were turned over to the Boone County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The woman's identity was not immediately released.

Investigators obtained a "high-quality" photo that allegedly shows a pickup truck hauling what is believed to be the same trash bin on May 11. The sheriff's office said the bin in the photo "had similar unique features that differentiate it from the numerous other City of Columbia trash bins throughout the City of Columbia."

At around 8:30 p.m. on May 18, the pickup truck form the photo was located and stopped. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Andrew B. Acton, is suspected of being the driver of the pickup photographed hauling the bin on May 11.

Acton was arrested and charged with abandonment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. Acton is being held in the Boone County Jail without bond.

64 Illegal Migrants Apprehended Offshore Puerto Rico [Photo not cleared for use]

Federal authorities say 64 migrants were apprehended from an overcrowded vessel near southwestern Puerto Rico earlier this month.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said its Air and Marine Operations (AMO) Maceda Marine Unit on May 9 detected and intercepted a Yola-type vessel near southwestern Puerto Rico. The vessel was boarded, and 64 individuals were found, including 58 from the Dominican Republic and six from Haiti.

The migrants were transferred to AMO and Puerto Rican police boats and transported to the Mayaguez Port of Entry. Border Patrol agents, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations and Puerto Rico Police, processed the group at Ramey Border Patrol Station for removal.

A photo shared by CBP shows the boat the migrants were traveling in was dangerously overcrowded.

“This interdiction underscores the relentless commitment of our agents and partners to securing our maritime borders and protecting lives,” said Christopher Hunter, director of the Caribbean Air and Marine Branch. “The swift, coordinated response prevented dangerous crossings and ensured migrants received necessary care. Our ongoing collaboration is essential to safeguarding Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands from the threats posed by illegal maritime activity.”

Michigan Officer Catches Baby Dropped From Window Of Burning Home [Photo not cleared for use]

Dramatic video released by authorities in Michigan this week show officers catching a baby dropped from a second-floor window during a recent house fire.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said crews responded at around 4:16 p.m. on Friday, May 15, to a structure fire on the 1200 block of Washington Avenue at a two-story residence divided into three separate units. Dispatchers were told the porch was on fire and a woman and her infant were trapped in the second-floor unit.

Officers were first to arrive on scene and found the second-story porch fully involved in fire on the right side of the structure. The 911 caller was seen leaning out of an upper-floor window on the left side of the building, holding onto her baby as smoke billowed out over them.

“Hey, throw me your kid!" the officer shouts. "Kick out the screen!”

The woman then dropped her baby down to the officers below. Officer Arnett safely caught the infant and passed the child to a nearby equipment operator. A ground ladder was then placed by the window, allowing the mother to climb down.

Both the mother and baby were transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation with no reported injuries. Occupants from the downstairs units were able to evacuate safely without injury.

Firefighters soon arrived and worked to extinguish the blaze, which was mostly concentrated on the exterior right side of the building, though it did spread to the attic and damaged an interior staircase, officials said. Crews had to remove parts of the roof edge and exterior siding to reach flames hidden inside the attic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

19 People, Including 3 Kids, Found In Tunnels At California Border Entering US [Photo not cleared for use]

Federal authorities say 19 Mexican citizens were found hiding in the drainage system at the Southern Border near San Diego, Calif., earlier this month, including two with previous criminal convictions and deportations.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said Border Patrol agents from the Chula Vista Station were alerted by the Remote Video Surveillance System of suspicious activity near the drainage tunnels at around 10:40 p.m. on May 4. Agents responded to the location and found 16 adults and three unaccompanied children attempting to illegally enter the U.S. through the tunnels.

All 19 people were citizens of Mexico, officials said. Among the group were 35-year-old Raudel Carrillo-Padilla and 31-year-old Ivan Carrillo-Padilla, brothers who were deported after their 2017 convictions for possession, transport, and intent to sell methamphetamine out of Yreka, Calif. Ivan had an additional deportation after a 2019 drug-related interdiction in Eugene, Ore.

Following the group's detainment, the San Diego Sector Tunnel Team responded to fully clear the tunnels and ensure no one else was inside.

CBP said all 19 individuals will be processed for removal or federal prosecution.

“These smuggling attempts are not only dangerous, but they also frequently involve individuals who pose a threat to public safety,” said San Diego Sector Chief Patrol Agent Justin De La Torre. “Thanks to the vigilance of our agents and the effective use of surveillance technology, this group–which included convicted drug traffickers–was apprehended before they could move further into our communities. If you try to illegally cross our border, we will catch you and arrest you.”

Police Still Seeking Suspects After Stolen Statue Recovered From Recycling Center In Colorado [Photo not cleared for use]

A beloved bronze statue stolen from a Colorado park has been recovered after staff at a recycling facility recognized it and notified detectives, but the investigation remains ongoing.

The Greeley Police Department said the life-size bronze statue "The Prize Catch" was stolen from Glenmere Park at around 2:30 p.m. on May 12. The statue depicts a barefoot boy holding a freshly caught fish.

Photos show the suspect or suspects cut the bronze statue at the ankles, leaving the feet and base attacked to the stone mount at the park. Police said a white box truck was seen in the area at the time of the theft and is believed to be involved.

On May 13, staff at Rocky Mountain Recycling realized a statue sold to them the night before was the same one pictured in the police press release about the theft. They secured the statue and notified authorities, who recovered it.

The statue was returned to the Parks Department, but police are still searching for the suspect or suspects who stole it.

Police are asking anyone who was in the area of the park on the afternoon of May 12, or who has home security or dashcam video, to look for the white box truck or any other suspicious activity and report it. Anyone with information about the case is asked to email Detective Labracke at lisa.labracke@greeleypd.com.

An off-duty police officer in Missouri was out bowling with his family when he came to the rescue of a young girl who got stuck inside a claw machine.

The St. Charles County Police Department said Officer Brown was out bowling with his family last week when he "spotted what every parent fears," a young child stuck inside the arcade's claw machine.

Brown jumped into action "armed with courage, nerves of steel, and approximately $4," police said.

"After an intense battle of skill, patience and button mashing, the veteran officer successfully defeated the nefarious arcade device and rescued the little girl," police said.

The girl was safely reunited with her family, and officer Brown returned to the lanes, where he bowled a "respectable 96," police said.

"Just another reminder that the Officers of the St. Charles County Police Department are always ready to serve the #SCC Community — on and off-duty," police said.

Driver Plunged 500 Feet Over California Cliff, Transported In Critical Condition [Photo not cleared for use]

A motorist was hospitalized in critical condition after driving over the edge of a 500-foot cliff in California, officials said.

Cal Fire San Mateo–Santa Cruz said multiple fire and rescue crews, California State Parks lifeguards, and medics responded Monday to a report that a vehicle went over a steep cliff off Highway 1 south of Greyhound Rock Beach. Rescuers estimated the cliff face dropped some 400–500 feet down to the beach below.

Two Santa Cruz City Lifeguards swam from Greyhound State Beach to the "pocket beach" where the vehicle fell. They found one patient and began administering CPR.

A Cal Fire Santa Clara helicopter responded to the scene and lowered a hoist basket down before airlifting the patient to an awaiting ambulance. The patient was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Cal Fire said California Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the crash.

Family Dog Helps Deputy Detain Trespassing Alligator In Louisiana [Photo not cleared for use]

When authorities in Louisiana responded to a report of an alligator on a residential property, they arrived to find the family dog had already taken the "trespasser" into custody.

The Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a report of a "reptilian trespasser" at a home on Hunters Hollow Drive at around 7 p.m. on May 5. Deputy Densmore arrived to find the homeowner's dog carrying the three-foot gator.

Photos shared by the sheriff's office on Monday show that even once deputies took custody of the alligator, the dog stayed alert and ready to assist.

"Not only was the family pet willing to pursue and detain the suspect gator, but in what appeared to be a strong audition for the K9 division, the dog clearly had the deputy’s back from the moment he arrived on scene," the sheriff's office said.

The alligator was safely transported and released "on his own re-croc-gnizance" to its natural habitat, the sheriff's office said.

"Charges were not filed, but the alligator was advised that loitering and resisting a good dog are both bad ideas," the sheriff's office said.

Hilton Is Offering Cross-Country Road Trips, VIP Festivals and Fireworks for Just 250 Points [Photo not cleared for use]

As Americans gear up to hit the road for the nation’s 250th anniversary, Hilton is leaning into the nostalgia and spontaneity of the classic summer road trip, offering a series of experiences that feel more like bucket-list adventures than standard hotel stays.

The hotel giant has launched Hilton Honors America Experiences, a limited-time collection of curated trips that members can book for just 250 Hilton Honors Points — a figure low enough that it can be earned with a single night’s stay. The catch: these packages are limited, released in waves throughout the summer, and expected to disappear quickly.

Timed to coincide with the country’s semiquincentennial celebrations, the program reimagines the American road trip as something both playful and aspirational. Each experience includes stays at Hampton by Hilton properties, a $250 gas card, and a themed starter kit, with itineraries ranging from stargazing in Utah to a pickle-themed festival takeover in Pittsburgh.

“In this milestone year celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, the open road feels especially meaningful – and Hilton Honors is proud to put our members at the center of it,” said Mark Weinstein, chief marketing officer at Hilton. “Through Hilton Honors America Experiences, we’re offering once-in-a-lifetime moments for just 250 Points, honoring the timeless American tradition of road trips, shared discovery, and the kind of spontaneous adventures that happen when you pile into the car and see where the journey takes you.”

The experiences themselves lean into Americana with a wink. One includes a 14-day, build-your-own road trip complete with a 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a year’s supply of fuel. Another sends travelers to the Flora-Bama Fishing Rodeo, one of the country’s largest fishing tournaments, where weigh-ins double as spectator sport. In Washington, D.C., guests can pair access to the sprawling Great American State Fair on the National Mall with early seating for July 4 fireworks the following night.

Other options feel designed for niche fandoms and curiosity seekers: VIP access to the Roswell UFO Festival, a behind-the-scenes pickle extravaganza at Picklesburgh — complete with pickle beer, ice cream and even a mechanical pickle — and a high-speed, multi-park roller coaster tour curated by enthusiasts.

Even the quieter itineraries come with a twist. A Southwest road trip through Zion and Bryce Canyon ends not with a hotel lounge, but a private, astronomer-led stargazing session under some of the darkest skies in the country.

The campaign is anchored by Hampton by Hilton, a brand with nearly 2,400 locations nationwide and a longstanding presence along major highways—never more than about 30 minutes from travelers on most routes. For Hilton, the emphasis is less on luxury than reliability, the steady backdrop to more unpredictable adventures.

“For generations of travelers, Hampton has offered a reliable, trusted home base that families — including their four-legged companions — can count on at the end of a long drive,” said Shruti Gandhi Buckley, global brand leader for Hampton by Hilton.

The experiences begin rolling out May 26 on the Hilton Honors platform, with new drops scheduled throughout the summer. For travelers willing to plan fast, or simply chase whatever pops up, the deal is simple: 250 points, a tank of gas, and a road map that leads to the unexpected.

85-Year-Old 'Hero' Thwarted Attempted Kidnapping In Oregon, Authorities Say [Photo not cleared for use]

An Oregon man is facing charges for allegedly posing as a utility worker in an effort to kidnap a woman, after he was thwarted by an elderly bystander, authorities said.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said 42-year-old Matthew Hokulii Aranda, described as a transient, was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury last week on two counts of second-degree assault, two counts of first-degree attempted kidnapping, second-degree attempted kidnapping, two counts of stalking, unlawful use of a global positioning system device, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing.

On May 8, Aranda allegedly disguised himself as a utility worker then laid in wait for "several hours" while the 25-year-old victim worked as a caregiver at a mobile home park on the 3900 block of South Stage Road in rural Medford. When she emerged, he allegedly used a Taser to "incapacitate and physically attack her," the sheriff's office said.

That's when an "85-year-old hero" heard the victim screaming and confronted the suspect, allowing her to escape to her vehicle.

Aranda allegedly Tased the elderly good Samaritan then chased the victim with a large hunting knife. She managed to get inside her car safely, but Aranda allegedly jumped onto the hood of her vehicle. She drove away, causing Aranda to fell off the vehicle, sustaining injuries.

Body-worn camera video shared by the sheriff's office shows deputies and a K-9 locating Aranda hiding in some nearby bushes and taking him into custody.

Authorities say Aranda previously served six years in prison following a 2016 conviction for delivering a controlled substance to a minor; using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct; and stalking. Charges of first-degree rape, sexual abuse, encouraging child sexual abuse, and coercion were dropped as part of the final plea deal.

The sheriff's office said it was assisted in the current case by Oregon State Police, the Medford Police Department, and the Jacksonville Police Department, and that the investigation remains ongoing.

Nearly 100 Bison Seized From Elderly Rancher In Neglect Case [Photo not cleared for use]

Authorities in Colorado seized nearly 100 bison and a mule from a ranch after working to resolve neglect concerns with the elderly owner.

The Moffat County Sheriff's Office said deputies working with the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and the Colorado State Veterinary Office executed a seizure operation Saturday at the Lay Valley Bison Ranch. Approximately 90 head of bison and one mule were seized.

The sheriff's office said it had been working with the owner, 83-year-old Daniel Martin, for the past month to try to "remediate ongoing concerns about the care and condition of the animals." Investigators ultimately determined the seizure was necessary to "protect the welfare of the animals."

During the seizure, one mule was determined to be "suffering to the extent that humane euthanasia was necessary." Two bison died during the operation, and another two were humanely euthanized due to their conditions. The seized animals are receiving veterinary care.

Photos shared by the sheriff's office show emaciated bison, as well as a ditch that appears to be filled with bison bones.

The sheriff's office said the investigation remains ongoing, but Martin is "expected" to face multiple misdemeanor charges of cruelty to animals.

iPhone Notification Leads Rescuers To Plane Crash In Nevada Mountains [Photo not cleared for use]

An automated iPhone crash notification led emergency responders to the site of a plane crash in a remote, mountainous area of Nevada, and the pilot survived, officials said.

The Elko County Sheriff's Office said an iPhone crash notification came in at around 10:30 a.m. on May 17. The GPS coordinates indicated the crash site was in the East Humboldt Mountain Range and south of Hole in the Mountain Peak, a remote area with "very limited access."

Deputies responded along with crews from multiple surrounding fire departments and MedEx, and rescuers began making their way up the mountain. While en route, responders learned there had been a plane crash and the pilot, who was the sole occupant, was alive with minor injuries.

Photos shared by the sheriff's office show the wrecked plane in a blanket of snow. The plane had crashed into the mountain at around 10,200 feet of elevation, above the snow line.

Due to dense cloud cover and inclement weather at the top of the mountains, air rescue could not fly to the crash site in the morning. Rescuers on foot prepared for the possibility that they might have to carry the pilot off the mountain.

At around 2:30 p.m., however, the weather cleared enough for a rescue helicopter to airlift the pilot off the mountain. The pilot was transferred to emergency medical services.

"This would not have been a successful recuse operation without the teamwork of all involved," the sheriff's office said.

Florida Dad Charged With DUI After Passing Out In Truck With 5-Year-Old Son Inside [Photo not cleared for use]

A Florida father is facing charges for allegedly passing out drunk in his vehicle at a gas station with his 5-year-old child inside, authorities said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded shortly before 8 p.m. on May 14 to a report of a person down at a Shell gas station in Plant City. They arrived to find the suspect passed out in the driver's seat of a truck parked next to a gas pump, while his 5-year-old son was in the backseat.

Body-worn camera video shared by the sheriff's office shows the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Patrick Voegtly, seemingly sleeping in the driver's seat with his door open.

The child in the backseat told deputies, "he's just sleeping." Deputies spotted a firearm in plain view, and appear in the video to remove it from the vehicle before waking Voegtly. As he was being detained, deputies allegedly found a second handgun in his pocket.

Deputies observed signs of impairment, but Voegtly refused to perform field sobriety exercises. He provided a breath sample, however, and registered a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit, the sheriff's office said.

Voegtly was arrested and charged with DUI over 0.15, child neglect, and improper exhibition of a dangerous weapon or firearm.

“This reckless decision could have ended in tragedy,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Driving under the influence is dangerous enough, but doing so with a child in the vehicle while armed shows a complete disregard for the safety of others. Thankfully, deputies intervened before anyone was seriously hurt.”

An injured worker at a California recycling center was rescued Sunday after a front-loader fell into the recycling pit, officials said.

The San Francisco Fire Department said crews responded at around 11:45 a.m. Sunday to the Recology Recycling Center at 501 Tunnel Avenue for a report of an industrial accident. They arrived to find a front-loader had gone over the edge of the recycling pit with the operator still inside.

A video shared by the fire department shows the front-loader down in the recycling pit, with one set of wheels still perched up on the edge of the pit.

‘The Rip’ Lawsuit: Can Real Cops Sue Ben Affleck and Matt Damon Over ‘Too Real’ Characters? [Photo not cleared for use]

What began as a gritty, “inspired by true events” crime thriller is now spilling into a real-world legal battle, with two Miami-Dade officers accusing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company of blurring the line between fiction and reality in ways they say have damaged their lives.

Jason Smith and Jonathan Santana, both sergeants with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, have filed a defamation lawsuit against Artists Equity, the production company founded by Affleck and Damon, claiming that “The Rip” drew so heavily from a real 2016 narcotics investigation that viewers have linked them to the film’s fictional, and deeply corrupt, police characters.

The movie, released on Netflix in January, follows a group of South Florida officers who discover millions in cash in a house and begin to suspect one another of stealing it. While Smith and Santana are not named in the film, their complaint argues that “distinctive details” from the real-life drug trafficking case — where nearly $22 million was found hidden in a Miami Lakes home — make the connection obvious to those familiar with the investigation.

“The Film and its promotional content imply misconduct, poor judgment, and unethical behavior in connection with a real law-enforcement operation,” the lawsuit states, adding that the similarities have caused “substantial harm to their personal and professional reputations.”

According to the filing, the fictional plot goes far beyond the facts of the real case, depicting officers committing serious crimes, including stealing drug money, conspiring with cartel members, committing arson, and even killing a federal agent. The officers say these portrayals have led friends, colleagues, and others to believe they were involved in such conduct.

The lawsuit also challenges the film’s origin story. While Affleck and Damon have said the project was loosely based on accounts from Miami-Dade Police Capt. Chris Casiano, who served as a technical advisor, the complaint alleges that Casiano “was not even part of the Narcotics Bureau” at the time of the real incident and “did not execute the search warrant” or participate in recovering the money.

The officers are seeking unspecified damages, along with a public retraction and correction.

“The studios will likely move to dismiss on multiple fronts,” said Haynes Boone Media Law Practice Group Chair Laura Lee Prather, who is not involved in the case. Among them, that the officers are not identifiable in the film, that the film is fiction, and that the officers “are limited-purpose public figures who do not plausibly allege actual malice.”

Prather explained the court would likely apply “an objective, totality-of-the-circumstances test” to determine whether the officers are identifiable in the film.

“The more differences between the officers and the characters, the less likely a reasonable viewer would associate the officers with the characters,” she noted.

“The studios could seek dismissal under Florida’s anti-SLAPP statute because the claims arise from a motion picture,” she said. Florida’s anti-SLAPP “benefits” the studios, she said, by allowing for an expedited hearing, the right to an interlocutory appeal, and attorney’s fees.

The film’s disclaimer that it does not depict true events “can help reduce risk,” Prather said, “but disclaimers are not determinative.”

Creators try to insulate themselves from liability by altering names, changing important details, and adding fictional plot elements,” she explained. “Ultimately, no single safeguard is dispositive. The line between ‘inspired by’ and actionable turns on a variety of factors.”
