NFL Referees Challenge Suspensions as Labor Expert Says Officials Are ‘Fed Up’ [Photo not cleared for use]

The NFL’s decision to suspend two officials has opened a larger fight over whether referees are being held to standards the league fails to enforce on the players and coaches confronting them.

The NFL Referees Association said in a statement on Oct. 6 that it will challenge the severity of the discipline imposed on line judge Jeff Seeman and referee Adrian Hill for separate incidents of unprofessional conduct.

Seeman received a two-game suspension after cameras caught him swearing at Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during the team’s loss to the New York Giants. Hill was suspended for one game after yelling and gesturing at Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson, who had tried to help him up after a collision knocked the referee down.

“Accountability matters, but that should not result in discipline that is excessive or inconsistent with established precedent,” NFLRA executive director Scott Green said.

Labor relations consultant Jason Greer of Greer Consulting said neither the punishment nor the union’s response surprised him.

“I was not surprised that the NFL had essentially suspended these referees for allegedly cursing at the players, but I also wasn't surprised when the NFL's Referee Association decided to go ahead and challenge or appeal the suspension,” Greer tells First For Sports.

The NFLRA acknowledged that officials must behave professionally but argued that the conduct directed at them cannot simply be dismissed as part of the sport. The union plans to meet with the league’s officiating department about disciplinary standards and players’ union leaders about increasingly confrontational on-field interactions.

“I guarantee you the referees have been challenging the NFL for years in terms of holding players more accountable to the level of respect and sportsmanlike conduct that they should demonstrate on the field,” Greer says.

“At this point the referees probably feel like they are the ones who are consistently catching the flack and the NFL is doing absolutely nothing to protect them,” he says.

Resolving the dispute, he suggests, will require more than deciding whether Seeman should miss two games or Hill should miss one.

“In terms of what it's going to look like for a potential resolution between the NFL and the referees, it's likely going to take the NFL and the Referees Association actually sitting down, talking about what the new rules of engagement look like,” Greer says.

Those talks, he adds, must address protections for officials facing hostility from players, coaches, crowds and even people online.

“They're catching it online, they're catching it on the field, they're catching it from the coaches, and they're probably fed up,” Greer says.

“I think what we're going to see is a new standard that will be introduced,” he says, “so that the NFL will hold the players accountable, and the NFL will also be able to hold the referees accountable, while also ensuring the referees feel like they're being protected through this entire process.”

Michael Douglas says the secret to nearly 26 years with Catherine Zeta-Jones is learning how to have difficult conversations without losing sight of the relationship.

The 82-year-old actor reflects on their marriage and brief separation in his new memoir, One Helluva Ride. Douglas and Zeta-Jones, 57, married in 2000, separated in 2013 and reunited the following year. They share son Dylan, 26, and daughter Carys, 23.

“A good sense of humor doesn't hurt, number one. And talking things out. Never using the words 'never' or 'always' when you get angry,” Douglas told People about the secret to their longevity.

“And putting yourself in the other person’s position before you make your value judgment,” he added.

The same was true for how they managed to reconcile after separating.

“Communication, talking. It’s an English trait — I know my mother had it — where you don’t talk about things that are uncomfortable,” he told the outlet. “I think we have to be able to talk out some things. It’s made it easier for us to understand each other.”

The couple’s history began with an early screening of Zeta-Jones’ 1998 movie The Mask of Zorro. Captivated by the actress, Douglas wrote in his memoir that he arranged to meet her at the Deauville American Film Festival in France, where he was promoting A Perfect Murder. Their first evening ended with Douglas telling her he was going to father her children.

“It wasn’t a cheap pickup line. It was the truth,” Douglas wrote.

They married a little more than two years later at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Nearly 26 years on, Douglas describes their connection as one that has moved beyond attraction and deepened into a close bond with mutual respect.

“When it comes to reconciliations after time apart, it's really important to look forward instead of backwards,” Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, tells Star.

“Constantly bringing up those issues that led to the separation will do no good, and both partners need to want the reconciliation. There needs to be more than just love or missing your partner to rebuild after time apart,” she says.

That forward movement still requires confronting what went wrong rather than pretending the rupture never occurred, however.

“Couples need to have open conversations about the issues that led to this time out. They must resolve them whether through difficult conversations or therapy,” Trombetti says.

“Be careful, because if conversations lead to heated disagreements, you'll be right back where you started,” she adds. “Both partners must enter these discussions with self-awareness and a willingness to listen to the other's point of view and feelings.”

Once the conflict has been addressed, she says, both people must agree that it is resolved instead of reviving it during every subsequent disagreement.

“They need to look forward without constantly bringing up the issue in future arguments. That's no way to heal,” Trombetti says. “This blip in the relationship over time should look very small in the rear view mirror.”

Rebuilding also means accepting that people change across decades together.

“There must be an understanding that in long term relationships, people grow and they don't stay the same,” Trombetti says.

“Lasting marriages do endure difficult times,” she says. “It's the willingness to allow for change and the realization and expectation that not everything will be smooth, coupled with the resilience to bounce back from difficult times because priorities shift, children grow up, and life evolves.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) said 562 pounds of suspected cocaine was seized and two U.S. citizens were arrested offshore Puerto Rico early Monday.

CBP said Border Patrol agents assigned to Ramey Sector coordinated with the Puerto Rico Police Department's Joint Forces of Rapid Action (FURA) division after law enforcement personnel spotted a suspicious vessel in the waters offshore Aguadilla on Oct. 5.

On board the vessel, authorities discovered 231 packages, the contents of which field-tested positive for cocaine, along with two individuals. In total, the packages contained 562 pounds of suspected cocaine.

The vessel, narcotics, and two suspects were transported to the Ramey Border Patrol Station for further processing. The suspects were identified only as U.S. citizens.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is leading the ongoing investigation and prosecution, CBP said.

“This seizure demonstrates the strength of our partnerships and the vigilance of the men and women protecting Puerto Rico’s coastal borders,” said Ramey Sector Chief Patrol Agent Reggie Johnson. “Working alongside the Puerto Rico Police Department and FURA, our agents prevented a significant quantity of dangerous narcotics from reaching our communities. We remain committed to disrupting transnational criminal organizations and safeguarding the public."

Law enforcement K-9s can sniff out money and drugs, track suspects and missing children, and they can apparently also rappel down the sides of buildings.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Colorado recently shared photos and a video showing their K-9s undergoing rappelling training, even in the rain.

"K-9 rappelling...yes, it's a thing," the sheriff's office wrote on social media. "This training has come in handy time and time again during real-world deployments."

The department put together a video "showing the action from all angles (even a unique POV from the bite decoy's glasses!)."

"If it's raining or snowing, we still have to keep them going," a deputy says in the video, which shows the dogs training in the rain.

"You know, we can't pick and choose when we're going to deploy," the deputy said. "We like to try to expose the dogs to, you know, anything and everything that we may come in contact with."

The video shows K-9 handlers leaning out an upper-story window of a training structure, dropping their K-9 partners down via "purpose-built" harnesses and rope. Once on the ground, the K-9s go straight for their targets: decoy "suspects" trying to escape through the ground-level front door, or suspicious packages to be retrieved before being hoisted back up.

"You know, this is not your PetSmart harness," a deputy said. "Just like the gear that we use, we want to give our dogs the best gear as well. So everything that we use is all very safe for them."

A sheriff's deputy in Oregon is being hailed for his "swift and selfless action" after rescuing an elderly man from a partially submerged vehicle after a crash.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded at around 1:18 p.m. on Oct. 8 to a report of a single vehicle crash near SE Shady Cove Lane. According to the report, the vehicle had crashed into Alsea Bay and was partially submerged about 40 feet from shore.

Deputies arrived to find a gray Subaru Outback submerged up to its windows, and saw an apparently trapped person inside calling for help.

"Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Deputies acted swiftly, locating a small boat nearby, and rowed out to the vehicle," the sheriff's office said.

Deputy Jacob Wright forced entry into the vehicle and determined the sole occupant, an elderly man, was "in distress" and unable to get out of the vehicle himself.

Wright entered the water and extricated the man from the vehicle, holding him above water until Central Oregon Coast Fire personnel arrived.

Deputies and firefighters loaded the man onto a personal watercraft for transport to shore, where awaiting PacWest Ambulance personnel provided treatment and transport.

"The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office would like to commend Deputy Wright’s swift and selfless action in rendering aid to an individual in crisis," the sheriff's office said. "His actions embody LCSO’s commitment to providing our community with outstanding service, ensuring the safety and quality of life of all our community members. LCSO would also like to thank our first responder partners for their assistance in safely resolving this incident."

What began as a shoplifting call led police in Washington state to a stolen vehicle with an improvised explosive device inside.

The Bellevue Police Department said officers responded at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, to a reported theft in progress at a business on the 600 block of 156th Avenue NE. With the help of the business, officers quickly identified the suspect as 30-year-old Johny Mixayboua.

When officers contacted Mixayboua about the alleged shoplifting, he allegedly provided false information about his identity. While he was being detained, Mixayboua allegedly appeared to reach toward an item in his jacket, where officers discovered a firearm and quickly disarmed him.

Arresting officers also found a key fob in his possession, and determined the vehicle he was driving had been reported stolen. Officers found the vehicle in the parking lot, and inside they discovered what "appeared to be" and improvised explosive device.

The department's Bomb Squad responded to the scene confirmed the legitimacy of the explosive device and transported it away from the scene to safely dismantle it.

Mixayboua was arrested on charges of first-degree assault; driving with suspended license; possession of a stolen firearm; unlawful possession of a firearm; obstruction of law enforcement; and making false and misleading statements. He was booked into the King County Jail.

Police said Mixayboua also had existing warrants from King County and the U.S. Marshals.

Detectives Seek Additional Victims After Hidden Cameras Found In Business Bathroom [Photo not cleared for use]

Investigators in California are searching for additional victims after a man was accused of placing hidden cameras in the bathroom of his business and on his own shoe to capture explicit videos.

The Ontario Police Department said detectives with its Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force are seeking the public's help identifying additional victims following the arrest of 39-year-old Upland resident Bryce Neighbors, who owns Young's Automotive in Covina.

During an ongoing investigation into child sexual abuse material (CSAM), officers responded to the 1200 block of North Palm Avenue in Upland on Sept. 30. Neighbors was allegedly found to be in possession of "numerous" videos of CSAM.

Further investigation revealed "numerous" hidden cameras had been placed inside the bathroom at his business in Covina, and had recorded unsuspecting victims. Neighbors also allegedly used a hidden camera in his show to record under victims' dresses.

Neighbors was arrested and booked into the West Valley Detention Center on multiple unspecified felony charges, but police said "detectives are concerned there are additional victims."

New-Car Payments Reach Record $821 As Buyers Pushed Toward Longer, More Expensive Loans [Photo not cleared for use]

The average new-car payment has reached a record $821, and buyers are increasingly responding by stretching debt across seven years, even as slightly lower interest rates offer little relief from higher vehicle prices.

J.D. Power and GlobalData projected the average monthly finance payment would rise 3.2% year over year in September. The average new-vehicle transaction price climbed 0.7% to $45,915, while the average loan rate dipped four basis points to 6.66%, its lowest September level since 2022.

“An $821 car payment isn’t just a transportation expense anymore,” Ted Jenkin, CEO of Exit Wealth Advisors, tells First for Autos. “For a lot of families, that’s starting to look like a second rent payment.”

The pressure is changing how buyers finance vehicles. Loans lasting at least 84 months accounted for 13.9% of financing, up two percentage points from September 2025. Meanwhile, 29.4% of trade-ins carried negative equity, leaving more customers rolling old debt into their next vehicle.

Nick Mintzias, founder and CEO of DriversHub, tells First for Autos vehicle prices remain the “biggest driver” behind monthly payments, noting that MSRPs rose approximately 30% between the 2019 and 2025 model years.

“The short supply of vehicles during the pandemic chip shortages gave manufacturers an opportunity to aggressively raise prices,” he explains, adding that inflationary pressures on production made it an “obvious move for manufacturers.”

“Cars that once cost $500 per month are now at least 30% more, even without considering the rising interest rates,” Mintzias says.

Those two forces have created what he calls a “perfect storm”: Inflation drove up MSRPs while higher interest rates made the resulting loans more expensive.

“On a $50,000 vehicle with a 72-month loan, increasing the interest rate from the standard 1.9% to today's typical 5.9% adds an additional $100 monthly,” he says.

Longer financing can make an expensive vehicle appear manageable without making it more affordable. But while 60 months was once the standard maximum term, buyers now routinely stretch loans across 72 months and more lenders are beginning to offer 84-month financing.

Credit can create another sharp divide between buyers considering the same vehicle.

“Two people can buy the exact same $50,000 car and have dramatically different payments,” Jenkin says. “The person with the better FICO score may qualify for a much lower rate which means your credit score is effectively part of the price tag.”

Manufacturers are increasing discounts to keep buyers shopping. J.D. Power projected average incentives of $3,574 per vehicle in September, up 7.3% from a year earlier. Mintzias expects incentives will need to be “greatly subsidized” in the coming years, as buyers squeezed by prices, rates and stagnant household incomes increasingly search for less expensive used vehicles.

For consumers still shopping new, Jenkin recommends treating each component of the purchase as a separate negotiation.

“Buyers need to negotiate three things separately: the price of the car, the value of the trade-in and the financing. When you blend all three together around one monthly payment, it becomes very difficult to know whether you’re actually getting a good deal,” he says.

“Buy the car your budget can afford, not the car the financing department says you can afford,” Jenkin advises. “A slightly less expensive car with a shorter loan can save you thousands of dollars and keep you from being upside-down when it’s time to sell.”

A surprise airline upgrade might seem like a travel perk, but one influencer believes it can expose something far more consequential: whether your partner prioritizes your comfort or his own.

New York City content creator Madeline McAdam ignited a fierce TikTok debate by arguing that a man traveling separately from his wife or girlfriend should automatically surrender his first-class seat to her.

“A real man is going to switch seats with you,” McAdam said in the video, which drew thousands of comments and shares. “It’s not about the seat. It’s the principle.”

McAdam traced the theory to a trip with an ex-boyfriend, who received a business-class upgrade while they were traveling to visit his family. She remained in economy as he enjoyed the upgraded cabin and occasionally waved to her.

“It was the beginning of the end,” she said. The experience helped convince her that he was not someone she wanted to marry.

While supporters shared stories of partners who would insist upon giving them the more comfortable seat, critics called McAdam “entitled” and questioned why a man should always be expected to sacrifice.

“This is about so much more than an airplane first-class upgrade,” Susan Trombetti, matchmaker and CEO of Exclusive Matchmaking, told First for Women.

“Some people view it as entitlement because the woman expects the seat and frames it around chivalry. There's been such a backlash from men who wouldn't want to give up their seat,” she observed.

But Trombetti believes the gesture can reveal meaningful qualities within a relationship, and even whether your partner is a “keeper.”

“They are willing to make your comfort and happiness a priority,” she said of someone who offers the seat.

“They are generous and not selfish because they are willing to give it to you,” she added. “It shows they have the ability to put you first in a relationship and not just think of themselves.”

Nevertheless, she said, “you should be willing to do the same.”

“You should also consider the broader pattern and any imbalances in the relationship,” Trombetti said. “Is someone constantly giving while the other is taking? That can be a deal breaking problem.”

Trombetti also pointed to other factors, such as one partner being particularly exhausted from work or childcare, or one partner being very tall, with a greater need for the additional space.

“Who gets the seat could represent the give and take in a good relationship, and that’s what it should be,” she said.

“Making it about someone’s character or a referendum on the relationship is the wrong approach. There's more to it than just basic chivalry,” she added. “It says a lot about you as a partner and your willingness to put their needs first, too.”

A seriously injured hiker was recently rescued in Utah after falling 100 feet and becoming wedged between a rock and cliff face, officials said.

Iron County Search and Rescue said that on Thursday, Oct. 1, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office High Angle/Ropes Rescue Team was called to assist in the rescue of a seriously injured hiker above the Red Hollow Trailhead along Highway 14.

According to rescuers, a 20-year-old woman was hiking with friends in the early morning hours in order to watch the sunrise over the canyon. The trail was still dark when she fell approximately 100 feet and became wedged between a rock and the cliff face.

Along with members of the rope rescue team, Utah Highway Patrol and Gold Cross Ambulance personnel reached the victim to assess her condition. After "carefully" freeing her from the narrow space, rescuers immediately began treating her "significant" injuries, including possible fractures to her leg and arm, and possible injuries to her ribs or back. She also had multiple lacerations and was in "substantial pain."

Due to the extent of her injuries, an Intermountain Flight was called for transport. Highway 14 was temporarily closed to create a landing zone for the helicopter. After being lowered to the canyon floor, the hiker was transported to the waiting helicopter, which transported her to a hospital in St. George.

"This rescue required coordination and a significant team effort. Every person on scene played an important role in getting the patient safely from a challenging location to the care she needed," rescuers said. "From all of us with the Iron County Sheriff’s Office High Angle/Ropes Rescue Team and Search & Rescue, we are thinking of this young woman and hope she has a smooth and full recovery."

U.S. Border Patrol agents in California recently found 115 gallons of liquid methamphetamine, valued at $1 million, concealed with a fuel tank of a semi-truck traveling without a trailer.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Border Patrol agents working in the San Diego Sector at around 11 a.m. on Sept. 29 stopped a northbound semi-truck traveling without a trailer on Interstate 15, about a quarter-mile north of a California Highway Patrol weigh station.

Border Patrol K-9 Loki alerted agents to the "characteristics of liquid methamphetamine" concealed within "at least" one of the truck's fuel tanks.

The vehicle and the driver were transported to the Newton-Azrak Border Patrol Station, where hazardous response specialists extracted the liquid from the fuel tank. The liquid tested positive for methamphetamine.

In total, 962 pounds, or about 115 gallons was recovered, with an estimated street value of $1 million.

The driver, a Mexican national, was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations and local authorities for prosecution. The truck was seized by Border Patrol.

“This massive seizure of liquid methamphetamine highlights the lengths these transnational criminal organizations will go to smuggle hard narcotics into our communities,” said Justin M. De La Torre, chief patrol agent for the U.S. Border Patrol’s San Diego Sector. “The vigilance of our agents, the reliability of our K-9 units, and our strong multi-agency partnerships are vital to dismantling these illicit smuggling operations and keeping deadly drugs off our streets.”

Authorities in Washington say they recovered $33,000 in stolen property from a Department of Corrections group home for recently released convicts, solving a string of recent burglary cases.

Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders this week announced two arrests and the recovery of an "abundance" of stolen property following an investigation that began on Aug. 15 when deputies responded to a residential burglary near Johnson Point.

In that case, a large amount of cash was stolen along with designer bags and jewelry, but "without cameras, there was little evidence to move on," Sanders said.

On Sept. 9, the same victim reported a second burglary, but this time they had installed cameras. The surveillance video showed a black Mitsubishi and a gold Subaru, along with one suspect a deputy was able to identify from prior encounters.

Investigators began looking into that suspect's contacts and learned the same Subaru was involved in a reported vehicle prowl. The victim in the vehicle prowl case positively identified the suspect from the burglary.

A deputy visited an Olympia address connected to the suspect Subaru, and as they approached, they saw the suspect Mitsubishi pull into the driveway. Deputies contacted that driver, who allegedly admitted having knowledge of the burglary but "downplayed his involvement."

The driver allegedly showed signs of impairment and was arrested for DUI. During the arrest, a firearm was seized, as the suspect is a felon not permitted to possess guns.

During processing, the suspect allegedly offered to help investigators "set his accomplice up by calling an asking for a ride," Sanders said. In front of deputies, the suspect called his alleged accomplice, who allegedly said he could come pick up his friend because he was already in the area looking for another place to burglarize.

The suspect showed up in the gold Subaru and was arrested for burglary, trafficking stolen property, and narcotics charges.

A search warrant was obtained for the Olympia residence, which investigators had since learned was a Department of Corrections group home for recently released convicts. After recovering an "abundance" of stolen property from the residence, they obtained additional warrants to search associated vehicles and a storage unit.

In total, investigators recovered approximately $33,000 in stolen property.

A lost dog in Florida made the smart decision to visit the local police station so officers could reunite him with his worried owner, officials said.

The Tampa Police Department said an "unexpected K-9 applicant" visited its District Two office on Sept. 30, and surveillance video shared by the department showed the pup presenting himself at the station door. A staff member opened the door and the dog entered, wagging his tail.

"This four-legged visitor was ready to join the team, but unfortunately, our K-9 roster is currently full. We made sure our hopeful recruit was safely reunited with his owner instead."

Body-worn camera video shows an officer arriving at the owner's home, asking, "how are you?"

"I'm not so good," she replies as she exits the home with her phone in her hand. "I lost my dog."

"I have him," the officer says.

The woman's distressed expression immediately shifts to a smile as she asks, "You have him?"

When the officer says yes, she asks, "really?"

"I was crying this morning," she says, appearing relieved even as the tears return.

"I wanted to make sure that you wanted him," the officer says. "I just wanted to make sure because he ran up to the police department."

The officer explains that he took the dog to the vet to look for a microchip, which is how they found her.

"Thank you, thank you," the owner says.

"He may not have gotten the job, but he definitely stole our hearts," the police department said.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the California border recently discovered more than 262 pounds of cocaine, worth an estimated $5 million, concealed inside the gas tank of a commercial passenger bus.

CBP officers working at the San Ysidro Port of Entry on Sept. 22 encountered a 2004 MCI Dina commercial bus driven by a Mexican national and referred the vehicle and driver for secondary inspection using a nonintrusive scanning system and a CBP canine team.

The scan revealed "anomalies" in the vehicle's gas tank, and a canine team also alerted to the gas tank. Further inspection of the gas tank revealed "signs of tampering" and a nonfactory compartment.

Officers found 122 packages concealed inside the gas tank. The packages contained a total of 262.21 pounds of allegedly cocaine valued at approximately $5 million.

CBP seized the narcotics. The driver faces state prosecution for the importation of narcotics. CBP said officers canceled the suspect's visa, "affecting his eligibility for future entry into the United States."

“This seizure demonstrates the exceptional work being done by our CBP officers at the San Ysidro Port of Entry,” said Port Director Mariza Marin. "Our officers understand the importance of every inspection and the responsibility that comes with protecting our nation's borders. Through their experience, the effective use of nonintrusive technology, and the support of our canine teams, more than 262 pounds of cocaine were intercepted. One REI store in San Francisco is at the center of numerous retail thefts resulting in at least eight arrests in recent months, police said.

The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) on Tuesday announced five arrests connected to repeated thefts at the REI store on Brannon Street. The five people arrested in September were allegedly responsible for a total of $19,000 in stolen merchandise.

The arrests follow three other arrests announced in August for thefts at the same location. The store is such a hotbed of theft, the SFPD Organized Retail Crime (ORC) Task Force has been working with REI representatives since May to apprehend "multiple habitual thieves working independently."

Henry Le, 28, was arrested Sept. 6 on theft and burglary charges. Police linked him to 11 incidents between July 29 and Aug. 31 in which nearly $6,000 worth of Yeti merchandise was allegedly stolen.

Benjamin Buckingham, 36, was arrested Sept. 23 on burglary and grand theft charges. Investigators accused him of stealing approximately $3,900 worth of duffel bags during three visits to the store between Aug. 4 and Aug. 31.

Piero Alioto, 44, was arrested Sept. 28 on multiple theft and drug charges, while Antonio Stewart, 56, was arrested Sept. 30 on theft charges. Police said the two men were allegedly responsible for five incidents between June 15 and Sept. 8 that resulted in losses exceeding $2,400.

Daniel De La Rosa, 37, was also arrested Sept. 30 after REI employees allegedly saw him return to the store for a seventh time and contacted police. Officers arrested De La Rosa as he carried unpaid merchandise outside and recovered $1,286.78 in goods, police said. Investigators linked him to seven incidents between July 1 and Sept. 30 involving more than $6,700 worth of merchandise.

Along with REI, police said the ORC Task Force has developed similar relationships with other retailers. The department made 874 arrests for retail theft between April and September, marking a 22% increase over the prior six months. The department has recovered more than $418,000 in stolen merchandise over the last year.

Two members of the New Mexico National Guard sprang into action Tuesday to assist a truck driver who was trapped after a rollover crash.

The New Mexico National Guard said Tech. Sgt. Paul Judice and Staff Sgt. Cristian Brown were traveling east on Interstate 40 approximately two miles east of the Sedillo exit at around 12:35 p.m. Tuesday when they spotted an overturned tractor-trailer alongside the highway.

They initially thought it might be the remains of an earlier crash, until they saw another motorist stop and run toward the scene. Judice and Brown then stopped to assist.

The truck had rolled over onto a fence and stopped just short of a culvert, "complicating access to the cab," the Guard said.

After determining they could safely approach the truck, Brown negotiated an approximately six-foot drop to reach the cab. He initially tried to access the driver through the windshield, but could not break the glass. He then obtained a pry bar and used it to gain access through the driver's door.

Brown assisted the driver, who appeared to be uninjured, out of the truck and down to safety, away from the truck.

“Service isn't confined to a uniform or a specific mission brief—it's a mindset that travels with our guardsmen every mile," said Maj. Gen. Miguel Aguilar, Adjutant General of New Mexico. "When faced with a rollover on I-40, Tech. Sgt. Judice and Staff Sgt. Brown demonstrated textbook situational awareness, stepping up to assess the risk and get the driver to safety. That is character in action, and they represent the very best of New Mexico's service members. I couldn't be prouder of them."

It's unclear what caused the crash.

Authorities in Louisiana say they have arrested a suspected scammer accused of booting cars without authorization then demanding payment to release them.

The Shreveport Police Department said a customer at the Cracker Barrel restaurant on Westport Avenue in August reported finding a boot on their truck outside the restaurant. A sticker provided a phone number to call to have the boot removed.

The victim called the number and reached Don Cook Jr., who only removed the boot after the victim paid $100.

Cracker Barrel management told investigators that neither Cook nor his business, Louisiana Traffic Services LLC, were authorized to boot vehicles at that location.

"So you create the problem, then charge somebody to fix it? The nerve of some people," police wrote on Facebook. "Grow up and get a real job. People work too hard for their money to have someone pulling a stunt like this."

Cook was arrested without incident on Oct. 1. Police did not specify the charges he may be facing.

Florida authorities have charged 10 people in an alleged commercial poaching operation accused of illegally harvesting approximately 23,000 pounds of fish and selling more than $150,000 worth of fish, shrimp and protected sea turtles.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the charges on Oct. 5 following a four-year undercover investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the Office of Statewide Prosecution.

The investigation began in May 2022 as authorities examined complaints about reef fish poaching in the Gulf. One suspect allegedly approached undercover investigators about purchasing illegally caught fish.

Authorities said the group routinely exceeded harvest limits for red snapper and gag grouper, then avoided reporting requirements by conducting nighttime dockside sales, selling from private homes and transferring fish on the water.

Three defendants — Terry Carrington, Anthony Folsom and Jordan Neylan — are accused of catching sea turtles and selling five of them to undercover officers. The animals included three adult turtles and two hatchlings. Sea turtles are protected under Florida law.

“Florida’s fisheries belong to all of us, and the rules exist to protect these resources and the fishermen who play by them,” FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto said, crediting the undercover officers who worked on the investigation for four years.

Uthmeier said his office would seek significant penalties against people accused of exploiting the state’s wildlife.

“Those who abuse our waters and wildlife will find out how tough our laws are,” Uthmeier said. “The Office of Statewide Prosecution, FWC, and our local law enforcement officers will ensure criminals are caught and punished.”

The defendants are Kayla Ann Boak, 36, of Bradenton; Carrington, 40, of Port St. Joe; David Eugene Echterling, 60, of Eastpoint; Folsom, 22, of Carrabelle; Steven Hawley, 68, of Eastpoint; Curtis Randolph Morse, 45, of Gibsonton; Neylan, 31, of Apalachicola; Robert Register, 40, of Carrabelle; Joe Frank Tessa III, 44, of Largo; and Casey Lee Whitlock II, 20, of Crawfordville.

All 10 face racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering and cheating charges. Carrington, Echterling, Folsom, Hawley, Morse and Neylan are also charged with unlawful possession or sale of marine turtles.

Carrington, Folsom, Neylan, Register, Tessa and Whitlock face additional charges involving the alleged unlawful use of two-way communication devices.

If convicted on all counts, Boak and Morse could each face maximum prison terms of 65 years. Echterling, Hawley, Register, Tessa and Whitlock could each face up to 70 years, while Carrington, Folsom and Neylan could each face up to 75 years.

"Commercial fisherman are an integral part of our communities and Florida’s economy,” said Col. An affair can end a marriage anywhere. In North Carolina, it can also expose the alleged third party to a lawsuit and a potentially staggering financial verdict.

A Davidson County jury awarded Tracey Hughes $850,002 after finding NASCAR driver Jennifer Jo Cobb liable for alienation of affection and criminal conversation, two centuries-old civil claims that most states have abolished.

Hughes accused Cobb of having an affair with her husband, Clayton Odie Hughes, a longtime spotter for Cobb’s racing team. The Hugheses married in 2003, had two children and separated in January 2021 after more than 17 years together.

“The lawsuit gave me power. It empowered me, it gave me focus. It gave me a job to do and stand up for myself,” Hughes told WFMY after the verdict.

Although alienation of affection and criminal conversation are often discussed together, they are distinct claims that require different evidence.

“Alienation of affection is a claim that a third party wrongfully interfered with an existing marriage and caused the loss of marital affection,” explained Hannah Hembree Bell, founder of Hembree Bell Law Firm, who is not involved in the case.

“The plaintiff generally has to establish that genuine love and affection existed in the marriage, that the affection was alienated or destroyed, and that the defendant's wrongful conduct caused that loss,” she added. Sex is not required.

Criminal conversation is more straightforward, and despite its name, it is neither a crime nor a conversation.

“Criminal conversation is simpler,” said Jessica Dahan, Partner at Berkman Bottger Newman and Schein, who is also not involved in the case.

“All that is needed to be proved is that there was a valid and legal marriage, and that sexual intercourse occurred between one spouse and a third party,” she added. The marriage doesn’t even have to end.

“Many times, if there is an affair, a litigant will pursue both claims if their situation meets the burden of each claim,” she explained.

That distinction helps explain the verdict’s unusual breakdown. Jurors awarded Hughes $50,000 for alienation of affection but $800,000 for criminal conversation. They added $1 in punitive damages for each claim.

Clayton Hughes was not a defendant in the case, exposing the fundamental controversy surrounding such laws: They allow a married person to seek damages from the outsider rather than, or in addition to, holding a spouse responsible for participating in the relationship.

Supporters view marriage as a contract with obligations, and like any other contract, they believe those who wrongfully interfere in the parties’ contractual interests should be held liable.

“The reason many states invalidated these laws is easy to understand. They are contradictory to no-fault divorce and invite litigious individuals to air what many see as very personal laundry,” Dahan said.

“These claims are not only a way for litigants to pursue damages for an affair outside of their marriage, but it also can serve as a path forward for litigants to publicly shame their spouse for such conduct and seek retribution from the third party who seemingly caused such strife,” she added.

That exposure may be particularly consequential when the defendant is a public figure.

“When allegations about an affair become the subject of a public civil lawsuit, private communications, relationships and allegations can become part of the public record,” Bell said. “For a public figure, that can create consequences far beyond the financial award.”

Bell cautioned against treating $850,002 as a standard price for an affair. Such lawsuits are relatively rare, and their outcomes depend heavily on the facts, although substantial verdicts are not unprecedented in North Carolina.

The case is also not finished. Cobb said post-trial motions remain pending and a final judgment has not been entered, emphasizing that the jury’s verdict is not yet a final order requiring payment. She may also appeal.

“What makes these cases so unusual is that the law allows one spouse to seek money from someone who was not a party to the marriage,” Bell said. “That’s the fundamental tension at the heart of these torts: where does personal responsibility for an affair end, and third-party liability begin?

At around 4:25 a.m. Sunday, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour detected a 25-foot panga-style vessel transiting north of the maritime boundary line and launched a small boat crew to intercept it approximately 20 miles west of Carlsbad.

The boat crew arrived on scene at around 5:45 a.m. and boarded the vessel. The boarding team detained 18 suspected migrants.

The Forrest Rednour crew transported the suspected migrants to Oceanside, where they were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents for processing.

A Florida man is facing charges after he was allegedly found fast asleep behind the wheel in the middle of an intersection and registered a blood-alcohol content nearly five times the legal limit, authorities said.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office said that at around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies spotted a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Littleton Road and North Cleveland Avenue in North Fort Myers with the driver "slumped over and not moving."

Body-worn camera video shared by the sheriff's office shows deputies knocking on the window and receiving no response from the driver, who appears passed out.

"Fearing the driver was experiencing a medical emergency, deputies broke the window to reach him," the sheriff's office said.

In the video, multiple empty beer cans can be seen in the vehicle, which is running, still in "drive," with the suspect's foot on the brake.

The suspect, identified as Fernando Guillen Delgado, was transported to a hospital. According to the sheriff's office, his blood-alcohol level at 4:15 p.m. was .308, and approximately 30 minutes later, it had risen to .377. The legal limit is .08.

Guillen Delgado was arrested for DUI and cited for operating a vehicle without a license.

A department store in a Washington mall was recently partially evacuated while police and firefighters worked to apprehend a suspect who was "crawling around in the ceiling," authorities said.

The Vancouver Police Department said officers responded to the Vancouver Mall on Wednesday, Sept. 30, after employees in a department store reported a man was crawling around inside the ceiling and breaking ceiling tiles.

"Officers gave him multiple commands to come down, but he kept moving through the ceiling, breaking more tiles and damaging lights, wiring and other fixtures," police said.

The second floor of the department store was evacuated while first responders worked to get the man out of the ceiling. a ladder was propped up into the ceiling and a mattress was laid in case the suspect fell.

After more than an hour, the suspect "finally stepped onto the ladder," but then he changed his mind and tried to climb back into the ceiling.

Body-worn camera video shared by the police department shows officers pulling the ladder away, causing the suspect to fall out of the ceiling.

The suspect landed on the mattress and immediately tried to flee, but "that didn't work out so well," police said.

The suspect, identified as Gabriel Hideo, was arrested on charges of first-degree malicious mischief and first-degree burglary, along with an outstanding felony warrant.

A kangaroo that escaped the petting zoo at a Missouri event on Saturday was safely captured and returned to its owners Sunday, police said.

The Marshall Police Department said an event held at the Saline County Fairgrounds on Saturday, Oct. 3, included a petting zoo for children, and one child who left the kangaroo enclosure "inadvertently left the gate unsecured." A kangaroo used the opportunity to escape, and an initial search of the area was unsuccessful.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, a resident spotted the kangaroo and called authorities. The caller "maintained visual contact" with the kangaroo until police and the Marshall Animal control officer arrived.

Another resident with experience raising and handling exotic animals arrived at the scene and offered assistance to the officers.

The kangaroo was safely captured and returned to its owners in Warrensburg.

"The Marshall Police Department would like to thank the citizen who located the kangaroo and remained in the area until authorities arrived, as well as the citizen with experience handling exotic animals who assisted officers and Animal Control personnel at the scene," the police department said. The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said its Opioid Overdose Investigation Section learned 32-year-old Zachary Diaz was allegedly running a business selling mescaline-containing cacti commonly known as peyote and psilocybin mushrooms by advertising them on Facebook Marketplace.

On Oct. 1, investigators served a search warrant on the 5500 block of Coolidge Street in Riverview and seized 131 live plants as well as cultivation and manufacturing supplies.

The seizure included approximately 50 pounds of cacti and 1.5 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms.

The sheriff's office said Diaz was already facing outstanding warrants in relation to the investigation. He was arrested and charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, manufacture or deliver within 1,000 feet of a church; and three counts of delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a church. He also faces two counts of manufacture of a controlled substance.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers in Texas last week seized over $628,000 worth of cocaine from a vehicle with a Mexican driver and U.S. citizen passenger.

CBP officers working at the Laredo Port of Entry's Juarez-Lincoln Bridge on Tuesday, Sept. 30, encountered a 2017 Nissan Rogue driven by a 35-year-old Mexican woman with a 30-year-old U.S. man as passenger and referred the vehicle for secondary inspection.

Using a nonintrusive scanning system and canines, officers found a total of 18 packages within the vehicle. The packages contained a total of 47.06 pounds of alleged cocaine with an estimated street value of $628,458.

CBP seized the cocaine and the vehicle. Both the driver and passenger were arrested, and Homeland Security Investigations special agents launched an investigation.

“This seizure demonstrates the dedication and vigilance of our officers at the Laredo Port of Entry,” said Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry. “U.S. Customs and Border Protection remain committed to safeguarding our communities by preventing dangerous narcotics from entering the country.”

An elderly woman was recently rescued after she went off trail and became lost while hiking in Utah, officials said.

Iron County Search and Rescue (SAR) on Saturday shared details of the Sept 19 rescue on social media, saying the incident serves as a "great reminder" for others before heading out into the wilderness.

At around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, rescuers responded to a report that a 71-year-old hiker had become lost while hiking the Willow Creek Trail in the Cottonwood Mountain area northeast of Paragonah. Once the woman realized she was off trail, she found an area with cell phone service to call 911. Dispatchers told her remain in that spot, and she did.

Dispatchers obtained the GPS coordinates from her cell phone, though the accuracy was "uncertain," rescuers said. An Iron County Sheriff's deputy located the woman's red Jeep near Cottonwood Canyon Road and Bear Valley Road, and SAR teams began searching the area.

Searchers hiked the Willow Creek Trail while others searched via ATV on steep terrain, calling and whistling for the lost hiker. Eventually a searcher spotted a flashing light on the hillside, and located the hiker.

The woman was "understandably tired" but otherwise in good health when she was found. By that time, however, it was dark, making the return descent "slow and careful." The hiker was safely escorted back to her vehicle, and the call was completed by 10:30 p.m.

"In this case, being prepared, having someone who knew her plans, carrying essential supplies, and—most importantly—staying put after calling 911 all helped bring this search to a safe conclusion," Iron County SAR said. "Know before you go. Be prepared. Stay safe."

A man was airlifted to a hospital in Utah Saturday after being injured in an "accidental shooting" while hunting, officials said.

Wasatch County Search and Rescue said crews responded at around 12:51 p.m. Saturday after receiving a report that a 28-year-old man had been shot while hunting in the Soapstone Basin area.

First responders from both Wasatch and Summit counties responded to the scene, and arrived at the remote location to find several hunters had stopped to assist the injured man, who was awake and alert.

After being stabilized at the scene, the man was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

KUTV reported that according to the Wasatch County Sheriff's Office, the victim was accidentally shot by his own father-in-law, who was putting away his rifle when it fired.

Dog Rescued From Vehicle After Crash Onto Rocky California Shore [Photo not cleared for use]

A driver who crashed off a California road and landed in the rocky surf below miraculously made it out of the vehicle with one of their dogs, but a second dog had to be rescued by firefighters.

The Ventura County Fire Department said crews responded Saturday along with California State Parks Lifeguards and the California Highway Patrol to a report of a single-vehicle crash off the Pacific Coast Highway north of Malibu.

Photos shared by the fire department show the vehicle smashed on a pile of large rocks and partially submerged in the surf. Firefighters arrived to find the driver had self-extricated from the vehicle with one of their dogs, but a second dog remained trapped.

Firefighters and lifeguards freed the trapped dog and carried it back up to the road. Neither dog was injured. The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by California Highway Patrol.

Skydiver Rescued After Crashing Into Tree In Maine [Photo not cleared for use]

A skydiver who got caught in a tree in Maine was rescued with only minor injuries, officials said.

Lebanon Fire-EMS said crews responded Thursday evening to an "unusual call" for a skydiver stuck 50–60 feet up in a tree, and had to call the nearby Sanford Fire Department for assistance.

Crews from Sanford responded with a ladder truck, which allowed rescuers to reach the trapped skydiver. After removing the skydiver from his pack, he was safely returned to the ground with minor injuries.

The incident took place near Skydive New England.

"We would like to thank the Sanford Fire Department for coming out and assisting our crews with safely handling the incident," Lebanon Fire-EMS said. "Calls like this are a good reminder of just how important mutual aid and strong working relationships are between neighboring departments. We may have different names on our trucks and serve different communities, but when help is needed, we work together."
